Thomas J. Waters

Thomas J Waters, 78, passed away on Friday, July 10, after a brief battle with lung cancer. The native Savannahian was born on Christmas Eve in 1937 and was a veteran of the United States Air Force Reserve, graduate of Savannah High School and Southern Polytechnic University. Director J. Edgar Hoover recruited him into the FBI, where he served as a Special Agent in Washington, DC.

After leaving government service he entered the energy industry, working up to Vice President and Secretary of Chattanooga Gas, ultimately retiring as Vice President of Atlanta Gas Light. He was a member of the Chattanooga Kiwanis Club, Board member and President of the Tennessee Gas Association, President of the East Ridge Chamber of Commerce and served as a Board member and officer for numerous charitable organizations.

In 2000 he and his wife, Cecile, returned to Savannah and became active members of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church and Alpha Sunday School Class. He enjoyed serving God through various committees there. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Henry and Dorothy Crawford Waters and his brother, Robert Edward Waters (Ouida).

He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Mary Cecile (Dix) Waters of Savannah; sons Thomas Julian Waters, Jr. (Cathy) of St. Petersburg, FL; Robert Crawford Waters (Theresa) of Ringgold, GA; Richard Henry Waters (Tonya) of Knoxville, TN; daughter Mary Elizabeth Robertson (David) of Franklin, TN; a sister, Mary Evelyn French (Norman) and brothers, Irvin Henry Waters (Juanita), George Carson Waters (Rita); and fourteen grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Island Chapel, (Hwy 80) Monday, July 13 from 5-7 p.m. His funeral will be held at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church Tuesday, July 14, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Thomas Waters, Jr, Robert Waters, Richard Waters, David Robertson, Woodrow Dulin and A. J. Haysman. Grandsons, Michael Waters, Joshua Waters, Carson Waters, Isaac Waters, Noah Waters, Aaron Waters and Julian Waters will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
